WHI 2021 STEERING COMMITTEE

WHY ATTEND?

Women’s Health is a critically underserved industry, with a plethora of unmet needs, under-researched diseases, and lack of innovative solutions and approaches.

The Women’s Health Innovation Summit is the sector’s leading platform committed to strengthening the network, tackling unmet needs and championing innovative approaches and solutions. Our focus is not only on female-only health challenges, but female-prevalent diseases and those conditions that affect or present differently in women.

With so many differing health challenges across a woman’s life, our flagship summit brings together all the critical stakeholders to focus on the intersections and sector-straddling challenges, with the ambition of ‘moving the needle’ toward improved outcomes in women’s health.

In 2021 these leadership discussions include:

  • Creating Opportunities for Investment and Scaling Women’s Health Start-Ups (Femtech).
  • Technological Advances and the Role of Digitization in advancing the sector.
  • The impact of COVID-19 on Women and Women’s Health, and the fall-out to come for the industry and the patient.
  • Latest Innovators & Entrepreneur Solutions showcased in our Women’s Health Innovation Spotlight.
  • Novel Care Models and Approaches; including moving to holistic, personalized or precision-based models.
  • Access to Care and Treatment for Women in the USA.

Join our leading network of pharmaceuticals, biotechs, medical device companies, start-ups, Femtech, insurers, CROs, investors, researchers, HCPs and advocacy groups, to drive innovation at the convergence of healthcare and technology.

This year, the Women’s Health Innovation Summit will include both face-to-face and virtual components to reflect our global community. Attend in person on September 14-15 in Boston or join virtually on September 28 for high-level live discussions, on-demand content from across the series, and the opportunity to connect and have meetings with other attendees.

Marsha B. Henderson

Innovative Leader & Change Agent, Former Associate Commissioner for Women’s Health for FDA
Food and Drug Administration

Marsha B. Henderson is a nationally recognized innovative leader and change agent for the health of women and their families. As the former Associate Commissioner for Women’s Health at the Food and Drug Administration, for a decade, she progressed and managed cutting-edge policy, research and educational outreach initiatives. The Office of Women’s Health advanced its scientific efforts, under her direction, to produce more than 350 research papers and journal articles to facilitate FDA’s regulatory decision-making and promote a better understanding of sex differences and health conditions unique to women. Her tenure produced the first FDA Women’s’ Health Research Roadmap, outlining seven priority areas for new or enhanced research including biomarkers, nanotechnology, cardiovascular disease, and postmarket surveillance as well as a framework to assess its impact. Her colleagues applaud her ability to set a vision and guide the concept to reality. One FDA Commissioner stated, “She is elegant…not just in style but in character, confidence and compassion.”

Ms. Henderson’s expertise in the development of public-private partnerships and culturally appropriate consumer engagement strategies led to the Women’s Health Take Time To Care Program, which has reached over 120 million people with FDA consumer information in 18 languages, and received awards from more than 96 national organizations. Her easy to read, science-based materials have been chronicled in Dear Abby, Parade Magazine, Hints from Heloise, and the IRS, as well as sponsored by external groups including the National Association of Chain Drug Stores, American Diabetes Association, Ford Motor Company, American Medical Association, and even Las Vegas casinos. Her novel efforts supported a one-stop Pregnancy Exposure Registries website to gather information about how prescription drugs or vaccines affect a pregnant woman and her fetus. In addition, she recently instructed her staff to expand the Science of Sex and Gender on-line accredited courses with the NIH/Office of Research on Women’s Health and to conduct FDA’s first “Scientific Conference: Opioid and Nicotine Use, Dependence, and Recovery: Influences of Sex and Gender” to address this national epidemic.

She is the recipient of numerous awards including the Dr. Estelle Ramey Award for Women’s Health Leadership from Society for Women’s Health Research; “HerMANA” Award for innovative outreach to Hispanic women, and Pinnacle Award for exceptional leadership in medication use for patients and caregivers.  The first non-pharmacist to receive the prestigious Jacob Miller Award from the American Pharmacists Association Foundation, she was also one of five Samuel J. Heyman Service to America Medal (Sammies) finalists from throughout the U.S. federal government. And as Chair of the national board of the YWCA USA, she led the U.S. delegation at the YWCA World Council quadrennial meeting in Bangkok, Thailand to focus on women’s issues.

Prior to her FDA career, Ms. Henderson served as the Director of Evaluation for the Interagency Council on the Homeless; Director of Placement for the National Health Service Corps; Chief of Analysis and Information for the Bureau of Maternal and Child Health; and Senior Advisor to the Director of the Women's Bureau at the U.S. Department of Labor.  Ms. Henderson earned a master’s degree from Rutgers University in health and hospital planning.  She is married to Wade Henderson, an internationally renowned civil and human rights lawyer.

Kelle Moley, MD

Deputy Director of Reproductive Health Technologies Global Health, Discovery and Translational Sciences
Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation

Dr. Kelle Moley is a career physician-scientist obstetrician/gynecologist who currently leads the Reproductive Health Technologies Domain within the Discovery & Translational Sciences, Global Health Division at the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.  Kelle joined BMGF in July 2020, with a 30-year history of basic and translational research on reproductive health issues in females throughout the life course-- from organismal to cellular and molecular levels of metabolic, developmental biology, embryo implantation and decidualization, and infectious diseases of the female reproductive tract.

Kelle earned her BA from Wellesley College, and her MD from Yale Medical School. Thereafter, she pursued an Obstetrics & Gynecology Residency and a Fellowship in Reproductive Endocrinology & Fertility at Washington University in St. Louis School of Medicine. Kelle then spent the next 3 decades of a thriving research career at Washington University—rising to become the James P. Crane Professor of Obstetrics & Gynecology, Vice Chair of Obstetrics & Gynecology, Chief of the Division of Basic & Translational Research for the Department of Obstetrics & Gynecology, Co-Director of the Institute of Clinical & Translational Science for the School of Medicine, and Director of the Center for Reproductive Health Sciences at the School of Medicine. Her research (published in some 150 peer-reviewed primary articles) led to an international reputation along with numerous honors, including election to the National Academy of Medicine in 2014. She also earned a reputation as a superb mentor to trainees, leading the reproductive endocrinology fellowship program at Washington University until she left academia in 2018. After a 2-year stint as Chief Scientific Officer and Senior Vice President of the March of Dimes she left to pursue her new position at BMGF.
